6 Steps to turning your passion or skill into a work-from-home career

“With my qualification, I can’t find the right job where we’re based.” Is this something you feel often, as you move from one base to another, waiting for the right work opportunity to pop up?

If a tailor-made job offer is difficult to find at the boonies where you are stationed, you can always come up with an idea, skill or talent that you can upcycle into a career for yourself. Take a course, get a new degree or spend some time honing your talents before you turn it into a dream job.

Here's how you can do this:
1.     Make a list of your degrees, skills, and passions. See if you can merge your educational qualification with your skills or interests. Or maybe, you’d like to run with your passion and turn it into a tangible work-from-home career. What are your skills, qualifications and passions?

2.   Check what you need to learn before you begin to earn. Do you need to do a few courses, or learn a bit about marketing, or web designing to add value to your business plan? Or, what is it that you’ve always wanted to learn?
3.   Set small but achievable goals. Whether it's about signing up for courses, practicing what you've learned or making a small batch of products for your business, chart out your baby steps. What small and achievable goals would you like to set today?
4.   Create a Facebook page to share your work updates with your circle. A Facebook page is the easiest way to get your work out there, but eventually, you can think of creating a website or blog too, to share your work with the world. What would you like to name your Facebook page? Do you know how to create one (Google the ways to create one)?
5.    Start an email list. Build your email subscribers and send them a short newsletter to keep them up to date about what you do. You don’t have to create a Facebook page and an email list together. Start with one and then go on to the other. MailChimp.com is my trusted email list builder, but you can find other that can suit your needs too.
6.   Take that plunge. Whether you want to sell a physical product, offer a service or create digital products, set a deadline for offering your work to the world. It’s easy to get entangled in the web of over thinking. So, set some goals for yourself and get cracking on that home-based venture.

Things to think about:
What would you like to build your work-from-home career around – your qualifications, skills or passions, or a combination of some of these elements?

What extra skills do you need to learn to get started?

What supplies or logistical set up do you need to start working?

Have you set some small but achievable goals today?
